The challenge of module 7

Since 1,5 year I’m a member of the ice skating association D.S.V. de Skeuvel. A couple months ago, I thought it was time to become a bit more of an active member. That’s why I joined a committee. With a few others, we joined the committee that was going to do a project with an organisation called ‘stichting Move’. This organisation starts projects on primary schools that are located in deprived neighbourhoods. These children get less opportunities from their surroundings and the organisation wants to show them that they have the power to change and achieve things.

They connect students, like us, to the school and together the students and children will do something nice for their neighbourhood. This can variate from making a wall painting to brighten up the neighbourhood, to organising a diner for all elderly in a retirement home.

Our committee was connected to a school in the Wesselerbrink in Enschede. During a couple of lessons, we discovered what the problems in the neighbourhood were and what kind of things we could do. We, for example, let the children go on a observation trip through the neighboorhood, they brainstormed a lot about the problems and solutions and they learned about voting in a democracy.

The children noticed that there was a lot of trash laying on the streets and in the playgrounds. We decided to tackle this problem and together with the children, we organised an cleaning competition. Around 50 children from the school joined the competition and in small groups they collected as much waste as possible. After an hour, they collected already 104 kg of waste!

After the competition, there was a small party at the school. The children decorated the place and made a whole buffet of nice food. Even the district agent came to visit and hold a small speech, to talk about the neighbourhood and how he viewed the ‘perfect neighbourhood’.

Overall, it was a really nice experience to be in a teaching position for a few months. I learned a lot from being in the classroom and being viewed as a ‘jufvrouw’ by the children. Besides that, I made all the pictures for the project, so I could brush up my photography skills. I also did the communication part of the organisation for the project. That means that I had to contact different medias for possible interviews and posts on social media. That was also a very valuable experience. I even got interviewed by the UToday!
