My portfolio

ClassroomBuddy

This module my project group and I created the ClassroomBuddy. The Classroom Buddy is an interactive system that visualizes noise levels of elementary school children and gives direct feedback on those noise levels. In addition to this it allows the teachers to suggest movement breaks. Because movement increases the concentration it also can help to reduce the noise levels of children.

Trying something new

I tried something new! I bought a drawing tablet in order to digitalize my notes. I realized that I could also use it to digitally draw things. I have to be honest, It is hard to learn to use a drawing program without the help of others. In order to navigate through the porgram I watched some videos and via trial and error I made my first two digital drawings ever. I will have to learn a lot in order to use the program to its full potential but I am pleased with the first results.

Redesign

I redesigned my website! Because of this I also decided to make some kind of logo. I wanted a simple logo that was not to complicated to understand. I also made a moodboard before I started to work on my new design.

Comic making

I made some comics and it was really fun! Because the comics were about my personal life I will not share the entire comics but you can find some snippits under this post!
I decided to got for a more abstract form and because of this I used colorful potatoes! They allowed me to create a fun comic without the struggles of making characters that are recognizable in 'the real world'! The two snippits you see below are from two different small comics I made

Getting out of my comfort zone

Not everything that you do has to be perfect.
I decided to go out of my comfort zone and try something new: making semi abstract images. I always find it facinating that people can create images without recognizable shapes or with minimal brushstrokes, so I tried it myself.

Were my eyes opened and did I found a new talent? No, but that is okay! It was really refreshing to do something that I normally would never do and it allowed me to experiment with different types of art. Well, I added my two out-of-my-comfort-zone-drawings under this post. Enjoy!

First world problems?

This module I worked on some problems I had in my personal life.... Real problems.... Big problems....
Do you know the feeling of laying in bed ready to go to sleep but that you realize that your lights are still on? Yes? Great! I felt the same. I happened way to often and because of this I decided to take matters into my own hands. I was going to change the world... or at least, my world. I gathered all my inspiration and I came up with a plan: I was making a digital light switch. By doing this I only needed to press one button on my computer and that the light would turn off. In order to accomplish my goals I used an Arduino D1 mini (ESP 8266) and a servo motor (this is a motor that can turn 180 degrees). Because the D1 mini has a wifi module I was able to make it wireless.

It is all in your head

I wanted to show you a head that I made while I was brainstorming with some peers from my student association. We all got some magazines and we were allowed to make something that we associated with the topic of that evening. I decided to make a head and show my thoughts.

Memento Mori

This module we worked with Maya, an 3D modeling tool. As end project I made two masks and to be honest, it was a lot of work. I began with the idea of an museum with a mask theme but the day before the deadline I decided that I was not happy with my results and that I wanted to change everyting.

The masks gave me some sort of misterious feeling and I knew that I wanted to do someting with that. I got inspired by paintings from the golden age where there was a lot of moralism. "Memento Mori" was a phrase that came back a lot in those paintings and these painting reminded me of my masks. Because of this I decided to make a spooky and dark setting with two masks, a letter and a candle. If I am honest: I think that those last minute changes were worth it but please look for your self to see if you feel the same way as I do!

Unity

You know what it find facinating? The fact that we enabled ourselfs as people to create. Not only are we able to express ourselfs through art bt we are also able to create thing in the digital domain. This module I worked with Unity and I had to create an Island. This projec is linked with the next portfolio post because we had to make an japanese house in Maya.

Imagine

Imagine. When I hear this word I connect it with so many other words: creativity, open mindness, new, out of the box, byond your wildest dreams. All those words are things that you need to achieve something. When I imagine something and I want to make it really, I need the skills to make my imagination come true.
This module we learned one of the imoprtant skills to realize my imagination: we learned about design sketching. This is a really usefull skill becuase it enables me to visualize my ideas and to create something new. At the end of the module we had to make an end-assignment and we had to finish it in one lessons. Under this post you can dind my final result. It is an spaceship (eventhough it also looks like a submarine, but anyting is possible in you imagination :) )

The beauty of mathematics

Sometimes I hear people talk about the beauty of nature or the beauty of people but I never hear people talk about the beauty of mathematics. Eventhough it might not seem as obvious mathematics has a beautiful and artistic side to it. You can create the most wonderfull things with as little as one formula. I made a mandala out of formulas and i was amazed how much you can achive by only using sines and cosines!

First creation in Solid Works

Before my workshop in Solid Works I had never experienced the pain, helplessness and range of emotions that a computer program could give to me. For the workshop we had to follow a build in tutorial and after finishing the tutorial I will never be the same. I learned to carry on eventhough things did not go as plan, I learned the basics of Solid Works and I learned the pain of losing the project that you are working on. Eventhough I had some struggles with Solid Works I was able to finish the tutorial and I made a camera. Right now it ins't much but with this skill I will be able to make things in the future!

Pigbit

This module my group and I (The forgotten vegetables) have made a mesh network using the painlessmeshnetwork library from Arduino in order to monitor the health of pigs. different variables were measured by using selfmade senor nodes. Some of the variables are: the temprature of the pig, noise levels in the stable and the amount of daylight. All these variables were put into an algorithm in order to determine if the pig is healty or not.

(These pictures were taken by Jannick Siderius, a group member of The Forgotten Vegetables)

Dream or Reality

'Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?' Not only Queen got carried away by this question. This module we made an interactive movie and you might have guessed it: our movie is about the question: is this real life or is this just fantasy. I was a member of projectgroup Hotel and together we made this movie. Do you dare to escape reality? Under this post you will find some screenshots of different phases in our movie. The first one is the eginning, the second one is the first choice that you, as viewer, will get. Troughout the entire movie there will be more choices.

Heads all around you

Do you feel the same when I say: 'I always see faces in cars, clouds and other stuff'? Exactly, there are faces everywhere. For Visual Communication we had to make faces out of materials and I made some faces out of money, with shadows and puzzle pieces. Underneeth this post you will find the face I made out of money. I photoshopped different part of faces that are on money around the world and I made a new face out of it.

Against the wind

When I was in high school we were allowed to do extra stuff if your average grade was above a certain grade. When we were allowed to participate in the 'Verbedingsproject' you could chose a subject you liked and you were allowed to skip lessons in order to work on your own project. In the second year of high school I made a car that drove against the wind using headwind. I really liked this project. I invested 45 houres in this project.
