The result of our interactive video for WCI, November 8th, 2018

After a few weeks of work it was finally time to present our interactive video, this Tuesday. Our idea was to make a weird sort of love story between, Kim Jung-Un, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. I know it sounds really weird, but it is actually a lot of fun! The idea was to have Kim Jung Un ask Trump on a date and with the interactive part you can make it a real love story or turn in completely sideways. The app that helps you saving lifes!, October 1st, 2018

In the 3rd grade of pre-university education, we got a project which was to help the Fireman of the Netherlands to invent something which could help citizens during a fire. It is a pretty vague project I know, but this meant you could pretty much come up with anything!

So me and my group started to brainstorm, thinking really far out of the box and we came up with some crazy ideas, with the most implicit explanations. But we did find one idea which to us seemed really good. And it probably is because it is in the shop everywhere now…

So our idea was to help citizens during a fire by connecting your smoke alarm to an app on your smartphone. So that is how it all started. We started of by looking into the technique of smoke alarms which was actually a pretty simple thing. When we finalised that, we started to look into the making of apps, and we were really lucky. Why you may ask? Because one of our group members was actually really into making apps, so he helped us understand it and took us through the process of making an app. While the first halve of our group was looking into the making of an app the other group started with looking into the most important thing. How do we connect the app to the smoke alarm and how is it going to work.

To be honest this was the hardest part, were we going to make an alert within the app, is it going to sent you a Whatsapp message or are we going to use old school texts. Well we discovered that the easiest solution would be to use the text messages to send the alert of a fire. Because for this we did not have to make the smoke alarm to be able to not just only connect to the internet, but also make it send a message. So after working on this project for a few months we got the smoke alarm to connect to the app, and make it send messages to the phone.

So like I said in the beginning, it was a project for the fireman of the Netherlands. But it was not just a project, it was a contest between every single Technasium school in the Netherlands. So we won out of every project of our school. After that we won the contest of Drenthe, and we went to the finals in with the winners of every state in the Netherlands. We did not win, which was pretty said. We did come third which was pretty solid out of the 12 projects. Because we thought this was such a good idea we asked our teacher if we should get patent on it. Our teacher told is that was not necessary… I wish we would have done it, because a few years later the idea was on the market and is now being used by a lot of big companies…

Project Techna

Techna, the robot that helps your children in school, September 26th, 2018

For our final year at pre-university education we had to do a big project called the PWS. We, me and my group, decided to connect our Technasium project, which we had been working on for about a year already, to this PWS. Which basically meant we had 1 big project instead of 2 smaller ones.

The first year of the project we had just used to get used to the programming, to learn Python and just to learn how the robot works. For this project we used a NAO Robot. We wanted him to help the children who were in elementary school. So we met up with an elementary school close to our high school. and we decided to programm the robot in a way that it could help children with ADHD to learn the multiplication tables. Thats how we started our project. We found that having the robot helping the children wo had ADHD gave the teachers more time to spend with other children, while the children with ADHD were learning maths with our robot. Which indeed was the goal of our project!
