HOW TO SURVIVE A HORROR MOVIE

An interactive video made with Ximpel

n the first module of creative technology, I needed to make an interactive video for the subject Introduction to CreaTe. I did this project with Lennart Derksen, Luit Meinen, Olaf Tempelman and Stijn Brugman. We all are actors in the video. I was the murderer, so I did a lot of the camera work. The video was edited by Luit. The script was written by all of us, after a lot of brainstorming for good ideas. What really helped with getting the storylines clear, was a flowchart. The flowchart is visible below.

The video itself is about a couple of boys that go camping. We wanted to create a horror movie, so, therefore, there is a killer in the woods. The viewer can make choices that influence the outcome of the story. In total, there are 14 different storylines. Nevertheless, we only have seven endings. We use scenes sometimes later in a storyline, than in other storylines. Consequently, the scene gets a different meaning.

A lot of the choices have an impact right away. Other choices don't have an impact at first, but later in the story, they have. One example is the hammer option. This was accomplished by variables in ximpel. Furthermore, some choices aren't available anymore, and others are, if you chose a specific option earlier. If I need to reflect on this project, I would say that I am satisfied with the result. I know that the quality of the video, and definitely the quality of the acting, could be better. However, I think that the idea worked very well.
