What? A series of drawings of my day
Why? For Artistic Existential within the minor Liberal Arts

This assignment was done from home, picturing a regular day out of my life. Every time it was half past … (10:30, 11:30, etc.) it was time to draw something that you were seeing. Right after the first drawing I realized that trying to perfect the drawings was definitely not the goal, as that would take away the entire day. It was a good practice to try and capture only the essentials of something.

What? An animation made with charcoal drawings
Why? For Artistic Existential within the minor Liberal Arts

This animation was made with a series of charcoal drawings, that were all done on a single sheet of paper. The process of this was interesting, as the assignment was to draw every step like it was the final result and you can only partly wipe away charcoal. The steps were told one by one, so you did not know what would be the next step when drawing the current one. The end results of the drawings was powerful, an entire classroom full of black sheets of paper, each one with its own story. It made me think about the fact that without the context of it, many people would not think of the black sheet as art, but after seeing the process they might chance their mind. After erasing the story by blacking it out, it came back to life when making the video.

What? A creature representing anxiety
Why? For Artistic Existential within the minor Liberal Arts

The assignment for this work started with meditation based on the “Chöd” method, a form of meditation during which people “feed themselves” to their inner demons, instead of battling them. By coming into contact with a certain emotion during the meditation (anxiety in my case) I was able to visualize this emotion and shape it into a creature, which has now a physical form. This physicalisation of my anxiety is something I think I would not have done without this assignment. It allowed me to create a work that is unique and personal.
It was made with iron wire, black fabric, clay and paint.

Where? At home.
When? 19/01/2020 – 24/01/2020
What? Screen Buddy
Why? For the Physical Computing end assignment

This is Screen Buddy, a little helper that prevents your screen from going to sleep when you’re distracted and tells you to pay attention. It also keeps track of the time that your screen has been on, when it has been on for too long it tells you to take a break/go to sleep/etc. Especially during this pandemic Screen Buddy can help you to stay motivated and prevent you from overworking.

Logo

Who? By Noah Busger op Vollenbroek
Where? At home.
When? 17/12/2020, 18/12/2020
What? Various versions of my logo
Why? To give my website more character, to improve my design skills.

As you can see these are different versions of the logo that you can also find on the rest of this website. When I was making this website I felt like it was missing something that makes you able to tell that you are on my website (and not on someone else’s) at a glance. I had no experience with designing a logo, so this was the perfect opportunity to try my hand at it.

Sketches

Who? By Noah Busger op Vollenbroek
Where? At home.
When? During M2, 11/2020 – 01/2021
What? Various sketches
Why? For sketching class, to improve my sketching skill.

These are a few examples of the sketches I did for the sketching classes in Module 2. The (toy) gun sketch was the very first assignment and was mostly to get familiar with basic sketching techniques and with the materials. The sketch with the mask and phone pictured was a storyboard assignment, mostly focusing on layout, but also showing the effectiveness of tracing. The zappelin sketch is the most recent one of these. This one was, among other things, to show the importance of putting the ‘horizon’ at a good height.

Array of penguins

Who? By Noah Busger op Vollenbroek
Where? At home and at the university using Processing on a laptop.
When? 23/09/2020
What? A program made with processing.
Why? To practice and for a programming assignment.

For programming class I have made a penguin that can flap its wings when you click and move its eyes when you move the mouse.
In a recent lecture we learned about arrays, so with the information I got out of that class and some help from a TA I made a grid of penguins.
