Last weekend I visited the GOGBOT Festival in Enschede. It is a festival about music, arts and creative technology. Here’s a little review about two installations.
The installation that I personally found the most interesting was a golden robot dancing on a cord. The reason this initially caught my eye is because its golden shell case was reflecting the light. Once I had a proper look I was fascinated by the elegant dancing. I think it was a very good decision of the creator to make a moving robot instead a still installation. This movement causes the art piece to remain interesting for a longer period. The fact that it was dancing so elegantly was very calming to me. Especially because all the other installations, surrounding this one, were very glitchy and loud. I think the cord also added another dimension to the robot. The cord made it just odd enough that I wanted to keep looking. All in all I really admired this dancing robot.
I found the big globe with screens the most irritating. The whole vibe was a little disturbing to me. The concept of this globe was based on filming people to display that real time and fast forwarded on loads of screens. I didn’t like the idea of being filmed, because it felt like it was invading my privacy. The screens were very glitchy which made it annoying to look at. The footage was also displayed in black and white to add to the creepiness. It also made a sound that I cannot really explain, but it was some sort of rustle. Overall it wasn’t appealing to me at all. However, I do think that this creepy vibe was the goal of the creator. All the elements of the installation added up very well. So even though it was very disturbing, it wasn’t a bad installation in my opinion.
