Every module my study organizes a project. A big assignment to work on throughout the entire module. For module three, this project was all about working with actual companies, and my group and assigned to IBM.

IBM had an very interesting project for us. Their headquarters in Amsterdam is a very high tech building (as you’d expect from a company like IBM) but its entrance doesn’t really reflect this. That’s where we came in. We had to deliver a concept that when implemented would transform their entrance into a wow entrance. Below are a couple of images showing what we came up with.

When we visited the IBM building in Amsterdam we found that they had all kinds of interesting products and demos in their visitor area, without any real explanation. We decided that this was a problem we wanted to fix and made that the goal of our project. What we came up with in the end was en entire host system. When a client enters the building they receive the wristband shown above. This band contains an NFC chip and, if they have consented to this beforehand, some very general info about the client in question, mostly about their occupation. After the client receives the band they can move on to the repurposed IBM computer shown above. On this screen, a virtual host appears and welcomes the client to IBM. The host then tells them there’s all kinds of interesting things to see in the visitors area and recommends some of them to the client based on their field of occupation. When the client walks to one of the demos they will find a screen like the one in the third picture where, when they hold the band against one of the colored orbs, the host will appear again and give the user some information about the installation tailor fit to their occupation and assumed knowledge.

When we delivered our concept to our IBM contacts they were very pleased with the result and even though it was only meant to be a concept they were eager to look into it and make it a real thing.

Working with a company like IBM was a very cool experience. Seeing their office and the things they do was immensely inspiring and then actually delivering a product to them really felt like more than education. Working for a company also taught me some lessons about that life so all in all this project was a very cool and worthwhile experience.
